What is the ISM Code?
The ISM Code (International Safety Management Code) is a mandatory international standard adopted by the IMO under SOLAS Chapter IX that establishes safety management objectives and requires ship owners and ship management companies to implement a Safety Management System (SMS). The ISM Code entered into force in 1998 for most commercial vessels.
ISM Code Key Requirements
- Document of Compliance (DOC) for the company
- Safety Management Certificate (SMC) for each vessel
- Designated Person Ashore (DPA)
- Emergency response procedures
- Non-conformity reporting and corrective action
