ISM Code – International Safety Management

What is the ISM Code?

The ISM Code (International Safety Management Code) is a mandatory international standard adopted by the IMO under SOLAS Chapter IX that establishes safety management objectives and requires ship owners and ship management companies to implement a Safety Management System (SMS). The ISM Code entered into force in 1998 for most commercial vessels.

  • Document of Compliance (DOC) for the company
  • Safety Management Certificate (SMC) for each vessel
  • Designated Person Ashore (DPA)
  • Emergency response procedures
  • Non-conformity reporting and corrective action
