What is STCW?

STCW — the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers — is the global framework established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that sets minimum qualification and training requirements for seafarers serving on seagoing ships. First adopted in 1978 and significantly updated in 1995 and 2010 (Manila Amendments), STCW is the foundation of seafarer qualification worldwide.

STCW Basic Safety Training Modules

  1. Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
  2. Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF)
  3. Elementary First Aid (EFA)
  4. Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR)

In the UAE, STCW training is offered by approved training centers including Xclusive Sea School, Marine Concept Sea School, JLS Yacht Training Institute, and Sharjah Maritime Academy. Course fees typically range from AED 1,200 to AED 5,500. STCW certification is valid for 5 years and must be renewed through refresher training.
