What is an LNG Carrier?
An LNG Carrier is a highly specialized ship designed to transport Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) at cryogenic temperatures of approximately -163°C. LNG is natural gas cooled to liquid form, reducing its volume by approximately 600 times, making it economically viable to transport by sea over long distances.
LNG Carrier Tank Types
- Moss Rosenberg (Spherical) — large spherical aluminum tanks
- Membrane (GTT) — thin membrane tanks within the ship's hull structure
LNG in the Arabian Gulf
Qatar is the world's largest LNG exporter, and many LNG carriers pass through UAE waters. Abu Dhabi also has LNG operations through ADGAS. Officers and engineers with LNG experience command premium salaries in the UAE job market.
