What is a Bulk Carrier?

A Bulk Carrier (also called bulker) is a merchant ship designed specifically to transport unpackaged dry bulk cargo — commodities that are loaded loose into the vessel's cargo holds without packaging. Common bulk cargoes include coal, iron ore, grain, bauxite, phosphate, fertilizers, and cement.

  • Handymax / Supramax — 35,000–65,000 DWT
  • Panamax — 60,000–80,000 DWT (fits Panama Canal)
  • Capesize — 100,000–200,000 DWT (too large for Panama Canal)
  • VLOC (Very Large Ore Carrier) — 200,000+ DWT
