What is NOR (Notice of Readiness)?

The Notice of Readiness (NOR) is a formal written notification tendered by the vessel's Master (or ship's agent on behalf of the Master) to the charterer, shipper, or consignee stating that the vessel has arrived at the nominated port or berth and is in all respects ready to load or discharge cargo.

Why NOR is Critical

The tendering and acceptance of the NOR is the trigger that starts the laytime clock. If NOR is tendered incorrectly, rejected, or disputed, it can result in significant commercial disputes about when laytime commenced — directly affecting demurrage calculations.

Valid NOR Requirements

  • Vessel must be within port limits
  • Vessel must be ready in all respects (cargo spaces clean and ready)
  • Tendered in writing to the correct party
  • Tendered within the laycan window
